the main idea of the research is the use of bio-inspired micro-structures in structural optimization for engineering applications. the micro-structures resembles the micro-structure found wood, bones, sea shells, horns, and other biological materials. we take advantage of the superior mechanical properties of this micro-structures, and design components with locally varying properties that can be seamlessly blended together. the technique can be used to design anything from airplane parts to prosthetics.
